The Office of Language Access invites and encourages you to participate in our ˇ°Hawaii Conference on Language Access, Laulima ¨C Working Together to Ensure Language Access in Hawaiiˇ± scheduled on March 28 and 29, 2008, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Hawaii Imin International Conference Center of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

This conference will bring together participants from Hawaii and the mainland United States to learn and share knowledge on language access issues, policies, and best practices.

Besides plenary sessions, there will be breakout sessions geared toward administrators of language access, as well as sessions for users of interpreters and translators. The final breakout track is geared toward bilinguals who are interested in becoming a community interpreter or translator and would like to learn more about this profession.

The conference keynote speaker will be Ms. Grace Chung Becker, Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Justice. She will present a national perspective on language access. Other speakers from Alaska, New York, Washington, DC, and Hawaii will talk about specific language access topics including interpretation and translation, cultural competency, law enforcement, technology, emergency preparedness, and other issues.

Business and non-profit (community) exhibitors are also encouraged to participate.
