Course Objectives
1) To introduce students to the basic concepts, principles, ethics and skills involved in community interpreting;
2) to furnish students with pertinent practical information about the community interpreter's role and profession;
3) to have hands-on practice of various community interpreting situations and techniques.
Assignments
1) Readings will be assigned to expose students to the current issues involved in community interpreting. Class time is devoted to lectures and discussions about these and other issues, including the skills needed for community interpreting. Group practice will also be done in class.
2) Students are required to be familiar with the contents of the readings to answer homework questions, for class discussions, and as preparation for role plays. Pop quizzes may be given to test the students' understanding of the readings.
3) A short (at least 5 pages) final paper is due at the end of the semester describing an interpreting event you watched or performed. The paper should include:
a) a description of the interpreting event (where, who, when, what language, etc.);
b) a critique of the performance based on the principles, skills, and/or other aspects of interpreting that we will have learned and discussed about in class. This should include any appropriate and inappropriate behavior, skills and/or lack of skills, techniques, suggestions for improvement, things you learned, etc.;
c) a reflection of the readings and their application.
Grades
Grades will be based on the following:
Participation 40%
(class attendance, quizzes, discussions, role-plays, homework, etc.)
Final Paper 30%
Final Test 30%
